The following speakers have confirmed their participation:

    The Hon Joe Hockey MP, Shadow Treasurer

    Joe Hockey is the Federal Member for North Sydney and the Shadow Treasurer.


    Joe was first elected to the Australian Parliament in 1996 and following his re-election in 1998, was made Minister for Financial Services and Regulation. He has since held a number of Ministerial portfolios including Small Business and Tourism, Human Services and Employment and Workplace Relations.

    Following the 2007 Federal Election Joe held a number of senior Shadow Ministry portfolios before being appointed Shadow Treasurer in February 2009.

    Prior to entering politics, Joe was a banking and finance lawyer with a major Australian law firm. He was also Director of Policy to the Premier of New South Wales.

    Joe is married with three very young children.

    Professor Kerryn Phelps, Adjunct Professor, University of Sydney 

    Prof Kerryn Phelps is Adjunct Professor at Sydney University. She was the first woman to be elected to the position of Federal AMA President and remained President for the maximum term of three years. Prof Phelps is currently the President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association.

    Professor Phelps has worked in the Australian media for 25 years bringing health messages to the Australian people. She runs two busy medical clinics in Sydney, is the health writer for the Australian Women's Weekly and is currently writing a textbook for doctor on Integrative Medicine which will be published later this year.

    In 2001 Prof Phelps was awarded the Centenary medal for services to Medicine and the Community.

    Bernard Salt, Partner, KPMG

    Bernard Salt is a KPMG Partner based in Melbourne Australia.  Bernard has established an international reputation as a trend forecaster for business and government. His best selling book The Big Shift predicted a surge in the demand for lifestyle and residential property underpinned by the imminent retirement of the baby boom generation.  His second book, also a best seller, The Big Picture, looks at how work, life and relationships are changing in the developed world in the early decades of the 21st century.

    Bernard authored and released a global study of Generation Y commissioned by KPMG International and called Beyond the Baby Boomers in July 2007 which attracted front page coverage of the Financial Times as well as coverage by The Economist.

    Bernard Salt is a best selling author, a columnist with The Australian and Melbourne Herald Sun newspapers, a regular on the Australian circuit, and a business advisor. Bernard heads a group of consultants within KPMG providing demographic-based advice to business.

    His views are regularly sought by the business community and by the general media. He appears regularly on radio and television programs including Sunrise, Today Tonight, A Current Affair and 60 Minutes.

    John Trowbridge, Executive Member, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority

    John Trowbridge was appointed a Member of APRA in 2006 and has responsibility for insurance supervision. John founded Trowbridge Consulting in 1981, a firm which became a leading actuarial and management consulting firm during the next 20 years. He has also held executive and director positions with insurance and reinsurance companies and served as a member of the Treasurer’s Financial Sector Advisory Council from 1988 to 2004. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors and a member of Australia’s Financial Reporting Council. 
     
     

    Jim Minto, Managing Director, TOWER Australia

    When the trans-Tasman TOWER Limited Group separated its New Zealand and Australian businesses in November 2006, Jim Minto took on the role of Managing Director of the demerged entity, TOWER Australia Group. Jim had previously been the Group Managing Director of TOWER Limited, overseeing the trans-Tasman TOWER businesses and reporting in to the TOWER Limited Board.

    Jim joined TOWER in 1988 in New Zealand as head of the company’s Trust business and led several other TOWER businesses in New Zealand (including the Managed Funds, Health and Life areas) before taking on the role of Chief Executive of TOWER New Zealand in January 2002. He left the New Zealand business in November 2002 to take up the role as Chief Executive of TOWER Australia Ltd and in March 2005 began oversight of all the TOWER Group businesses.

    A Chartered Accountant, Jim has held a number of other directorships and appointments and has been very active in Industry bodies throughout his career.

      Hoa Bui, Director, KPMG Actuaries 
     
    Hoa Bui has 20 years experience providing actuarial, audit and consulting services to life insurance and fund managers in Australia and Asia.   She held senior actuarial positions in AC&L, AXA and Tower before joining KPMG Actuaries.
     
    Hoa has a long term interest in risk product pricing, valuation and management . She is currently the director in charge of the IFSA-KPMG experience studies and have previously been involved in the Institute of Actuaries of Australia production of earlier mortality and morbidity industry studies. Hoa holds a Bachelor of Economics in actuarial studies from Macquarie University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
     
     

    Mario DeLosa, Diversified Products Manager, Medibank Private

    Mario is currently the Diversified Products Manager at Medibank Private and has been in this role since 2005. In that time, Mario has managed and implemented the Medibank strategy for diversifying its product range beyond pure health insurance into Life, Travel and Pet insurance.

    Mario also worked at Medibank prior to 2005 as a Corporate Development consultant developing strategy related to overall organisational development. Prior to Medibank, Mario worked at AXA as a product manager in the personal superannuation and life insurance division. Mario holds a Masters of Marketing at Monash University in Victoria.

     

    Marianne Perkovic, BEc MBA, General Manager, Distribution, Colonial First State

    General Manager of Distribution, Marianne is responsible for the delivery of Colonial First State’s range of platforms and investment solutions into the Australian market.

    Marianne has 15 years’ experience in financial services. She started in the industry in 1994 as a Technical Consultant, which gave her strong experience in superannuation. She was with Count Financial Limited for 11.5 years; over her time at Count Marianne’s focus was improving the efficiency of the advice process for Advisers and enhance client communications to assist in the delivery and understanding of quality advice. She held various roles at Count, which included General Manager, National Business Development Manager and Technical & Adviser Services Manager. She was appointed as an Executive Director in 2004, then Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director on 21 August 2006. Her CEO appointment made her the youngest female CEO of an ASX listed Company. 

    Her industry experience includes memberships with IFSA’s Financial Advice Network Board Committee and the FPA’s Medium and Large Licensees Committee. Marianne was part of the working groups for both IFSA and FPA which coordinated industry submissions to the government.

    Marianne has a Bachelor of Economics with a Business Law major from Macquarie University and she completed an MBA with the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in 2005.

      Richard Klipin, Chief Executive Officer, Association of Financial Advisers 

    Richard started in the Financial Services Industry back in 1989 as an adviser. He advised for 5 years before joining Mercantile Mutual as a Funds Management BDM.  Over the successive 9 years Richard had a number of roles including National Sales Manager and Head of Practice Management for ING/Mercantile Mutual.

    Richard was a founding partner of The Encore Group, & also spent time with NAB/MLC as Region Manager for their Bank Adviser Channel.  His last role prior to joining the AFA was Head of Strategic Relationships for ING.

    In his current role as CEO of the AFA Richard is focused on:
    ·  Building the AFA into a large National Adviser Association, by offering a strong member proposition.

    ·  Building the brand & profile of the AFA in the Industry, with Government & in the broader community.
    ·  Bringing together Advisers & product providers to enhance the position of advisers in the Community. 

    Richard has an MBA & a BA Dip Ed from Macquarie University.

    He is passionate about body surfing, playing soccer & spending time with his Wife, Shelly & little boy, Benjamin & baby daughter Gabriella.

      David Gott, BSc, FIA, Managing Director, Life & Health, Swiss Reinsurance Company (Hong Kong)

    David started his career with Mercantile & General Reinsurance in London in 1987.  Having qualified as an actuary in 1991, David took the opportunity to transfer abroad, firstly to South Africa pricing and marketing life reinsurance, and then on to Canada where he underwrote special risk and medical reinsurance in the US market, by then for Swiss Re. He returned back to the UK in 1998, supporting various aspects of the business including structuring various financial and capital solutions for life clients.


    David transferred to Hong Kong in 2003 to head the actuarial team responsible for pricing terms and conditions for the life and health reinsurance business written by Swiss Re in the China Region. In 2005 he took on his current role of leading Swiss Re’s pricing control and underwriting risk management for life and health business in the Asia Pacific region.

     

    Shane Burdack, Chief Underwriter, Munich Reinsurance Group in Australasia

    Shane is Chief Underwriter of the Munich Reinsurance Group in Australasia with whom he has been since 1996. Prior to this he worked for a major risk writing direct insurer for 9 years in a number of risk assessment roles. He has held senior positions in several life insurance industry bodies and is a past President of the Senior Underwriters Risk Forum in Sydney and the Life and Disability Risk Assessment Group in Melbourne. He has served on the Australian Life Underwriters and Claims Association national executive and the Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA) Life Risk Management Board committee. Shane was appointed to the Human Genetics Advisory Committee during 2009 for the current triennium and chairs the IFSA Genetics Working Group. Shane is a Senior Associate of the Australian New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance, a Certified Insurance Professional, an Associate member of the Academy of Life Underwriting in North America and holds a Diploma in Health Counselling.

      Damian Hill, Chief Executive Officer, REST Superannuation


    Damian Hill joined REST Superannuation, Australia’s largest fund in terms of membership in 1999 as Administration Manager before becoming CEO of the fund in September 2006.

    Since joining the fund  Damian has played a key role in a number of exciting developments including the launch of a powerful and sophisticated Customer Relationship Management system, delivery on world best-practice administration and customer service, the launch of Acumen, REST’s corporate super offering and an Allocated and Term Allocated Pension.

    Damian has over 20 years experience in life insurance and superannuation. His previous roles have included technical advice, business analysis and consulting to superannuation trustees including industry, retail, corporate and public sector funds.

    He has been involved on a number of industry/government working parties in respect to diverse areas of superannuation legislation.

      Dr Bill Monday, Chief Medical Officer, CommInsure

    Bill holds the position of Chief Medical Officer for CommInsure and is part of their Underwriting and Claims Strategic Solutions team. Bill left clinical practice 15 years ago to pursue a career in Insurance medicine. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Cape Town and went on to post graduate studies at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Before joining CommInsure, Bill was Chief Medical Officer for Hannover Re South Africa for 12 years. He has a keen interest in Cardiology and Renal medicine after spending a number of post graduate years in both these area. Bill is passionate about applying evidence based medicine to Insurance medicine and enjoys the training aspect of his current position. Bill is married to Dee a paediatric nephrologist and they have a 10 year old son Sebastian.
     
      Professor Ron Trent, Professor of Medical Molecular Genetics, University of Sydney

    Ron Trent is Professor of Medical Molecular Genetics at the University of Sydney, and Head of the Department of Molecular & Clinical Genetics at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has been involved with Australia’s National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in various capacities including member of Council and Chair of the Human Genetics Advisory Committee (2006-2012). His research interests in genetics focus on gene – environmental interactions. In his hospital work, he supervises a DNA testing laboratory. His major clinical/laboratory expertise in medical genetics is in the thalassaemia syndromes. He has written a medical textbook called Molecular Medicine which will come out as the 4th edition in 2012.

    Damien Mu, Chief Distribution and Marketing Officer, AIA Australia

    Damien Mu joined AIA Australia in April 2007 as National Manager Client Development and moved into the role of Head of Group Insurance in early 2008. Since commencing, Damien has played a key role in developing and growing the company’s Group Insurance business increasing the market share in this channel by almost 11% to 20.5% (as of March 2009), taking it from number 4 to number 1 in the Australian market. In August 2009, Damien was appointed to the role of Chief Distribution and Marketing Officer, assuming overall responsibility for the company’s Group, Individual and Direct Distribution Life insurance channels, including the product and pricing function.  Damien also manages the Marketing function across the business.    
     
      Andrew Hagger, Executive General Manager, Insurance, MLC

    Andrew was appointed Executive General Manager of Insurance for MLC in March 2009. In this role he is responsible for leading the development and growth of the Insurance business including the individual, group and general insurance offerings.

    Andrew previously held the role of Executive General Manager of Private and Institutional Wealth from April 2008 after joining NAB as Executive General Manager, Office of the CEO in February 2008.

    Prior to joining NAB Andrew worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers for 21 years, 11 of these as a Partner of the firm. He held the position of Managing Partner, Melbourne and was the National Managing Partner for PWC’s Private Client Services group.

    Andrew has a Masters in Applied Finance, a Bachelor of Economics and is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

     

    Melinda Howes, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Actuaries of Australia

    Melinda Howes is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, a role she commenced on 8 February 2010. Prior to her appointment as CEO of the Institute, Melinda was Director of Policy & Industry Practice at ASFA – The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia.

    An actuary, she has more than 22 years experience in the financial services industry, most of which has been spent in superannuation.

    Before joining ASFA in September 2008, Melinda spent four years with ALEA Actuarial Consulting designing superannuation benefit projection tools, case studies, superannuation technical and educational support for a range of wealth management and financial planning clients. A main focus of this role was illustrations of the adequacy of members’ superannuation.

    Prior to that, she spent nine years with BT in a variety of roles culminating in Director of Superannuation and Retirement Products. She has also worked in life insurance and superannuation with Prudential.

     

    Nick Adams, Director, Direct Marketing, Westpac Banking Corporation

    Nick Adams is the Director of Direct Marketing at Westpac’s Retail and Business Banking division which is responsible for customer service, sales and marketing for 4.4 million consumers, small and medium enterprise customers. Nick has worked for leading companies including American Express, Citibank and MBF.

    Nick is an active member of ADMA, having held various committee positions and was named one of the four young stars of Australian marketing at the 20th Anniversary edition of Marketing magazine in 2004. In November 2009, Nick was awarded Australian Direct Marketer of the Year by ADMA.
